“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” — General hymn anthem for SATB voices and piano with optional trumpet trio; words by Robert Robinson; music from Trier Gesangbuch, 1695; arranged by Anthony Giamanco.
The fanfare opening with trumpets and piano create a regal entrance for unison women at measure 5. Three stanzas follow the words of Robinson made familiar in our hymnals, however new melodic clothes allow us to experience these words afresh. Unison men continue stanza one with two part choir continuing at measure 13. Full divided choir completes the stanza with brass and piano adding a two measure interlude. Stanza two, set a cappella, is primarily hymn-like in structure with occasional rhythmic independence in the men's parts. Again, the fanfare interlude moves between the stanzas, this time modulating from F major into G major. A slower, stately tempo finds unison voices delivering stanza three. The accompaniment changes to a flowing eighth note pattern to illustrate the texts of “bind my . . .heart” using vertical chords, and “prone to wander” with high ranges and wandering notes. The anthem concludes with brilliant accompanying chords and full voiced “Amens.”
The accompaniment, both piano and brass, are critical in creating the majestic style of this setting. The piano part requires a solid player comfortable with reaches beyond an octave, large leaps, and key changes. The trumpet trio should be performed by skilled musicians for accuracy. A separate brass part is included in the score.
Performance options include singing without the brass. Parts are cued in the piano score to be used, if needed. The a cappella section may be doubled for security. A closed score is included for ease in reading.
Appropriate days: festive services; service themes on grace, forgiveness, or mercy; and general worship.
